What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session

When you schedule your first therapy session with Greene Psychology Group, you can expect some initial paperwork that includes questions about your background information and health history. We also ask you about the problems for which you seek treatment. You can expect the same level of care and attention, whether we meet with you in person in our Raleigh, NC office or by means of telehealth appointments.
Some of the paperwork you will complete for your first visit includes:
  • Consent and service agreement forms
  • HIPAA forms
  • Insurance information
  • Health history, including a list of your current medications
  • Questions about your symptoms
  • Medical record release form-click this text to edit it.
These are standard documents you complete before visiting with most healthcare providers. As with your other medical care, you can expect patient confidentiality and respect of your patient rights. All of the questions asked of you before the first visit help us provide the most individualized care possible. We need to learn more about you so our therapists can understand your unique needs.
As part of your first visit, your therapist will ask you more questions. Some of these may include:
  • What symptoms are you experiencing?
  • Why do you seek therapy?
  • What do you feel is not right in your life?
  • What is your current living situation?
You and your psychologist or other therapist will develop a bond of trust and open communication. Therapy typically requires ongoing visits, sometimes for a specific period of time. You should not expect to solve your problems in the first appointment. However, you can feel some relief after this session, knowing that you are on your way to the solutions you need.

How long will my psychological treatment last?

How long your therapy lasts depends on your specific needs and goals. Some people only need a few sessions, such as for short-term problems in their life. Others require several months or even years of psychotherapy. How long it takes each person to feel better depends on their individual situation and needs.

Your therapist will work with you to determine a treatment plan. At Greene Psychology Group, we understand that you must factor in the limitations of your insurance policy. To make your treatment easier, we work with you according to these limitations and provide multiple payment options.
